The Standard newspaper today has some shocking images of the destruction of the Mau Forest that is evidently still going on every day - in spite of current political debates over the forest's degradation and plans to evict illegal tenants who have been allocated land there etc.
To buy a tree seedling to be replanted in the Mau (if you are in Kenya) just send a text to 5254 - and you will be charged 100 shillings. The initiative is sponsored by EABL Foundation, Nation Media Group, Kenya Wildlife Service, Greenbelt.
Dear Frances, just wanted to say how much I am enjoying your blog - you are very brave! I too am a long term expatriate, Dubai at the moment 13 yrs, before that Cape Town 10 yrs, brought up in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Athens. Looks as if we may be moving to Nairobi at long blasted last. I always stop in Nairobi en route to Cape Town every year, adore it, daunted by it at the same time - but not too mcuh. Have spent a lot of time studying Kenyan social history. Husband was born there, in laws fled the Mau Mau. Family joke is that they never got hold of my mother in law! Husband works in advertising - he makes films and things, I'm a psychotherapist. Have a son 11 and daugher 9. Would be super to meet up one day when we finally make it there! Thanks again for your super blog! Christina Cooper Drake
