The Kenyan Kikoy/Kikoi

Well, like everyone else, have just survived the last week of the school term with the seemingly endless round of concerts, speech days, gifts to source for teachers and birthday parties.

The week before this last crazy one, I took a very decadent day trip to Mombasa to help my very good friend buy stock for her shop in Central Africa.  She has spent years in East Africa, so knows what she's doing and says that in oil rich Gabon, where she now lives, there is simply nothing locally available to buy, so stock simply flies off the shelves.

Our girls trip was great fun  - mainly because it was a chance to catch up properly without children and the normal distractions, but I don't envy her the gift shop lark.  From what I've seen and heard, the gift shop business is actually quite cut throat and these businesses are more often than not run by unscrupulous, scary women!  My friend has plenty of stories of 'spies' scribbling down her prices and rivals poaching staff and suppliers.  However, it was really interesting to go on a local shopping trip with somebody who is able to see the wider commercial appeal of Kenya made goods.

I normally get dazzled by choice in markets and shops, then when I buy a kikoy or kanga (especially when they are intended to be gifts) I fall in love with the things and can't bear to part with them.  Kikoys and kangas wash well, retain their colour and the fabric softens over time.  Inexpensive local jewellery (specifically the recyled magasine paper necklaces) look exotic abroad and I know that my sister-in-law got accosted on a Cornwall beach by strangers wishing to know where she got her colourful kikoy towels from.  Who can blame them, they are so pretty!

The concept is this:

But the reality is this:

Actually, let's face it, it's this:

Who am I kidding, it's really like this:

Cost of a kikoy on Biashara Street, Mombasa is 300 shillings (it's recently gone up from 260/-).  Thats around £2.75.  Kikoy.com website: price £24.95 (that's around 3,000/-).  A kikoy towel costs 700/- (up from 600/-).  Cost on Kikoy.com: £34.95 (3,800/-)

I love the local shopping experience though.  As well as paying more, if you buy online you don't get to climb the rickety steel ladder leading up into the roof storage (fearing for your life all the while), you don't get to meet the kind shop assistant who holds the ladder and patiently catches bundles of kikoys as you throw them down.  You can't hear the hum of sewing machines, or taste the dust, or the spice tea served in small glasses, or watch the Masai coming in and out to buy shukas, and swerve coming into the shop beggars looking for coins.  Oh and the potholed road outside, puddles, dirt, ladies in niqab veils out shopping, street hawkers covering parked cars with goods for sale, hand carts whistling by, noise, smells, hustle and bustle, shouting.  It's just not the same.

I now have a shelf full of candy striped kikoys and kikoy towels that I just want to keep, not give away.  It's hopeless.

Read more about our Mombasa shopping trip here:

That day my friend and I also found the wholesale/producer of Aspiga leather sandals among other things ..... but that's another story.. Not going to tell you all my secrets am I?!  But then again, what's it worth?

  1. Actually, you should recommend your reader not to buy from Kikoy.com.

I wrote an article (in French) in 2008 called "The kikoy's war and celebs in kikoy" informing my reader that Kikoy Company UK Ltd tried to trademark the "kikoy" in UK in order to have international market monopoly
    http://www.peperuka.com/2008/04/04/la-guerre-du-kikoikikoy-et-celebrites/

Don't believe me - just google for it - http://www.google.co.ke/search?q=Kikoy+Company+patent

The funniest thing is that Kikoy Company UK is saying in its website that their are continuously helping local women group who have no other means of earning a living; while at the same they are trying to kill the market of thousands of local producer of kikoy and local weaved products

Luckily, Kikoy Company UK Limited failed to register the kikoi as its trademark in the United Kingdom... But they'll try again !! So please, stop buying from them, buy local kikoy

  2. I am getting married in the UK in August and wanted something Kenyan to give to my guests. You have just given me a great idea, I know that both my African and British guests would appreciate a kikoi. Just not sure about the size...but thanks!

The staff at Kikoy.com outlets at the Nairobi malls would have you believe though that their kikoys are of better quality than those from Biashara Street, which is of course a lot of hogwash. They carry very few kikoys on stock for you to believe they are one-of-kind quality items. I swear, there is no difference in quality, only in price.

Hey, I wonder in any of you could help me. I'm from South Africa and I'd really like to find a cheap place that I can buy Kikois from to sell in South Africa. Im wanting to make bags and all sorts of things.

Where is the best place to get them? I'd quite like to buy rolls of the material. Is there a place like that that any of you know of?

I'd really really appreciate your help :)

Kikoy.com kikoys and the ones sold on Biashara St (Nairobi - see Haria's Stamp Shop Ltd for a wide selection) are made from the same factory. The only difference is being branded/ unbranded. Quality is the same.

    Hello African Expat Housewife,

I also need 150 kikoys for my wedding in London.
Do you know, if Yusuf is still selling kikoys?

As the last post was quite a while ago, I wanted to check, if you maybe came across a another shop with nice kikoys in the meantime?

Thank you very much for your help!
All the best from a rainy London,

    Hi there,

Thank you so much for your quick answer!
So, Yusuf just wrote back to me and his price is
    Kshs 1000/- per towel kikoi.
Do you think, that is a fair price?
Has it gone up from 300 to 1000 in two years?

On top of that goes the delivery, which will be done by a different company, price per kilo (min.100 kilo).

Thank you so much! Your help is unvaluable!
All the best from (even worse) rainy London
    Anna

  16. sorry about the rain!! I see that some other supplier just put their email contact there - If it is the same Haria, they are a great chain of school uniform suppliers here.

Re pricing - the Kikoy/towels were always more expensive. (Kikoy on one side/colourful - thin towel on the other - perfect for the beach in hot climates). I think that 1,000 is fair, for this but you could always try to bargain him down to 850 or 900 shillings for a large order. As I recall, they are selling these for 25 UK pounds each on kikoy.com - so still a bargain at the equivalent of 8 pounds.

The 300 shilling price was for the straight kikoy only (ie no towel) - Yusuf has some great colours - however, I know that prices have gone up for these too all over Kenya. It may be nearer 400 or 450 shillings each now. Don't forget - you can try to do a deal for over 100 pieces.

Good luck! Such a nice wedding gift if it does come off!

Kikoi sheets are just lovely. I bought some to bring back home to the States. We've been on the coast for 5 months and are leaving at the end of next month. Sheets would be a nice gift for a wedding.

When will a designer create good stuff with kikoy????

is Biashara street in Nairobi or Mombasa, when I google it there seems to be one in each place?? confused

There is a Biashara Street in both towns !
The one in Mombasa - don't even try walking there - the peddlers and hawkers now occupy the ROAD ! and to get into a shop is next to impossible...

There's a Biashara Street in both Nairobi and Mombasa, both sell similar stuff such as Kikoys and Kangas. Unless you are in Mombasa, it may be better to shop in Nairobi for the Kikoys. A couple of shops on Biashara St Nairobi carry cotton kikoys, while it is quite possible to get mixed polyester/ cotton from Mombasa, and that is the main reason in the price difference. The Mombasa kikoys sometimes are actually made in India, while in Nairobi you can get the Kenyan Kikoys. Hope this helps...

  27. Hi all.

I have gone through all your comments and its sad that kenyans still hike the prices when it comes to foreign customers. I sell the same kikoys you get at 3000 kshs in Mombasa and Nairobi at kshs. 500. I am based in Nairobi and you can view my facebook page https://www.facebook.com/pages/SOKO-PWANI-Fashion/565890853494865 for more affordable Kenyan fabrics. I believe everyone deserves a fair price and overpricing products is just barbaric and unethical.

I read here 'Kikoy.com kikoys and the ones sold on Biashara St are made from the same factory."

Anybody got that factory contact details?

I want to produce my own lines and brand, and need touch with the factory directly.

    Many thanks!
