Census Day - Kenya

Of all the spurious excuses for a national holiday - 'Census Day' tomorrow must take the biscuit. Industries and businesses are up in arms over the additional cost of it all, compounded by the fact that there is currently power rationing eating heavily into profit margins in Nairobi.

A Kenyan friend (fellow School mum) says she and others are highly suspicious of the census. Why does it need to be carried out so often? (every 10 years). Why are they asking people to cite their tribe? There was a bit of a debate over whether to do this I gather, but ethnicity is included on the form that must be completed. She said she suspected that census information was used by masterminds behind post election violence, to identify where specific tribal groups were clustered - pin pointing hotspots for clashes. She was also skeptical about the security issues of sending 'enumerators' in red t shirts around to everyone's houses this evening in order to count. 'I told my askari to keep them outside the gate' she said. 'afterall,' she said, 'anyone can get hold of a red t-shirt - I am not letting strangers into my house.'

  1. Very crazy...

We were in city center today going between Lonhro and International House...a few issues to resolve prior to our departure. They were not that easy, so they thought they would take advantage of Mzungu and advise us that we should come back "tomorrow"...

Thank God I had seen it in the newspaper or it could have stunk...

Awaiting the redshirts myself. I have a trained German Shepherd between the fence gate and my front door. I expect to have the conversation through the fence?

Do I tell them I am "Cherokee" when they ask my tribe?

  2. Hi EPW.there are legitimate reasons for a poll i.e. national planning, distribution of economic resources etc.
However, in Kenya this tends to be politicised because the tribal numbers are used as a proxy for the number of votes that tribe's son will get in the polls.

I have just been counted and it went ok

Beggars belief why this could not be done on a Sunday, even allowing for folks going up-country for the weekend. And as for allowing strangers to come into your house, eyeing things up... Why does the Govt. keep pretending that they are running a normal country?

Pesa tu, I will assume that your comment is a joke. When did you last see 'national planning' for example? Does it, by any chance, live in the Game Parks, I wonder?!

    ;)
